| Quote: | Council boss faces Brewery Field questions
May 8 2008 by Deborah Rees, Glamorgan Gazette
BRIDGEND’S new council leader can expect tough questions about the future of the Brewery Field.
The ground, pictured right, is owned by Bridgend County Borough Council and is subject to a covenant that restricts its use to sport and leisure.
But Bridgend Ravens will be challenging leader-in-waiting Mel Nott and his team to provide answers as to how the ground’s lease was transferred from Bridgend Rugby Football Club Limited to Leighton Samuel’s firm Decor Frame.
The club believes the pre-2004 Labour-run council should not have allowed the lease to fall into the hands of either a company or individual. Requests for help from the Rainbow Alliance proved fruitless.
“We entered discussions with the old authority back in February, but for one reason or another the relevant documentation was not forthcoming,” said Bridgend Ravens director David Rees.
“However, we will continue to challenge the new authority, as we want answers as to why the lease was allowed to be transferred to Decor Frame.
“We are led to believe that it was not a council decision, and that the move was made through an individual.
“And we are also now told that there are moves afoot to remove the covenant clause in the original deed made by the Earl of Dunraven in the 1920s.”
The new authority is expected to come under pressure from Celtic Crusaders rugby league side, which is looking towards a 12,000 seater stadium for possible entry into 2009 Super League.
Council officers are exploring sites that could also accommodate Bridgend Ravens and Bridgend Town Football Club.
But Bridgend Ravens oppose the move and say the Brewery Field is their spiritual home. |

Don't think the council gives two hoots about us and reading this says it all.

From today's Gazette :-
Jeff Jones, council leader at the time, said the first elected members heard of the transfer was at a supporters’ meeting of the now defunct Celtic Warriors rugby union regional side.
“If my memory serves me correctly, Mr Samuel pays BCBC about £8,000 a year for the lease, which was transferred to his company by council officers without the knowledge or approval of elected members,” said Mr Jones.
“Elected members only discovered this when Mr Samuel told a Celtic Warriors supporters’ meeting he intended to sell the Brewery Field.”
But the council spokesman said officers had approved the transfer of the lease under delegated powers and it took effect on June 27, 2003.
Current council leader Mel Nott said his recently formed Labour administration would be looking at the situation in due course |
